Future athletics star

The Educational and Research Institute of Physical Education and Sports continues to fill the section “Famous athletes of the Educational and Research Institute of Physical Education and Sports”.

We continue the section “Famous athletes of the Educational and Research Institute of Physical Education and Sports”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the State Institution “Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University”.

In the section “Retro Sports” it should be noted that from 1964 to the present, our students and graduates participated in the Olympic Games and won medals of various denominations. But there was a break when in 1984 the USSR boycotted the Los Angeles Olympics. The reason for the boycott was the refusal of the US government to provide the USSR and other socialist countries with special security guarantees.

The series of international competitions “Friendship – 84” was announced on May 24, 1984 under the slogan “Sports – Friendship – Peace”. The official opening of the competition took place on August 18 in Moscow at the large sports arena of the Central Lenin Stadium (Luzhniki). They were held in all Olympic sports, except football, as well as in three non-Olympic sports – sambo wrestling, table tennis and tennis.

In track and field athletics, in addition to competitions in Moscow and Prague (Czechoslovakia), the Friendship – 84 program included the traditional Olympic Day competitions in the GDR.

At these competitions, a student of the Faculty of Physical Education of the Luhansk Taras Shevchenko Pedagogical Institute Olga Vladykina (Bryzgina) won a bronze medal at a distance of 400 m and a gold medal in a 4×400 m relay.

This is one of the first medals of our student in the international arena. We will tell you about her other Olympic medals in the next posts.
