On May 5, teachers of the Department of Defectology and Psychological Correction Anastasia Mukhina, Natalia Seromakha conducted a scientific and practical seminar with students majorign in “Special Education” on the topic “Sensory characteristics of children with autism spectrum disorders. Assistance Strategies. ” The seminar was held online through a Skype session. The following issues were considered: 1. The main psychological and pedagogical characteristics of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). 2. Sensory characteristics of children with ASD.
3. The main strategies for helping children with ASD to correct sensory impairment.
During the seminar, Anastasia Mukhina drew attention to the fact that many problems in behavior are associated with the fact that people with ASD perceive and process sensory information in a completely different way than people with neurotypic development. Most children with ASD have a list of abnormalities in the sensory area. Natalia Seromakha noted that the characteristics of the sensory sphere of children with autism spectrum disorders cause learning problems and lead to various types of maladaptive behavior. Many difficulties caused by the sensory characteristics of children with ASD can be corrected by creating a special sensory environment or using special equipment. Moreover, the perception of each child with ASD is individual.
Teachers of the Department introduced the seminar participants to the main directions of the sensory integration method; analyzed the typical practical situations faced by specialists in working with children with ASD; using concrete examples, we examined the methods of correction of the sensory sphere in children with autism spectrum disorders.
