Days of Science 2020 at the Faculty of Natural Sciences

This year, the Faculty of Natural Sciences held the traditional sessions of the “Days of Science 2020” in a remote format.

The scientific reports of students and teachers were presented on the educational portal of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University and the official groups of departments on Facebook, and the discussion of the reports was carried out using video conferencing using Zoom and Skype.

At the Department of Biology and Agronomy, the sectional meeting “Science Present: Innovations in Biology and Agronomy” was held on April 20-24, 2020 and included familiarization with the reports on the educational portal of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University and discussions during a video conference via Skype.

At the sectional meeting, 22 scientific reports were presented as part of the topic “Trends in the Development of Bioresource Potential of Ukraine in the Framework of Global Ecosystem Security” (state registration number – 0117U005558), which addressed issues of botany, zoology, plant physiology, soil science, etc. In addition, the conference featured presentations on topical issues of biology teaching methods. Traditionally presented reports contained materials that students received during training and practical training, preparation of term papers. A very interesting and practically significant direction of the scientific work of the department is a study on agronomic issues conducted by scientists, postgraduate students, master’s students and students.

Teachers of the Department of Geography on the comprehensive department theme “Strategy for the Economic and Social Development of the Territorial Community as an Instrument for the Effective Use of the Natural Resource Potential of the Territory” (state registration number – 0117U005559), which is designed for 3 years, has been working for the second year. The practical significance of the topic is determined, firstly, by its connection with the process of administrative-territorial reform of the territories of the Luhansk region and other regions of Ukraine, and secondly, by focusing on the needs of the united territorial communities, they are looking for effective strategies for their development. The novelty of the topic consists in exploring the possibilities of developing such a strategy that would contribute to the most complete and rational use of the natural resource potential of their territories by territorial communities.

Based on the materials developed on this topic, the article V.S. Dernov, N. I. Udovichenko New fossil sites in deposits of Bashkirian Stage (Lower Pennsylvanian) of Donets Basin was published in the journal Web of Science.

The traditional “Days of Science – 2020” took place remotely: reports and presentations were presented in the group “Geographers of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University” on Facebook, the final discussion and debriefing took place on April 24. The conference was attended by students of all courses and master’s programs. Teachers also presented their reports. The total number of conference participants was 30 people.

The results of scientific research in geography, geology, and methods of teaching geography were presented for discussion. Most of all there were reports devoted to urgent problems of teaching geography and modern (including innovative) technologies. Active participation in the conference was attended by master’s students majoring in “Secondary Education (Geography)”, most of whom are young teachers. The third-year student Igor Fedorov prepared his scientific report on the results of a geological mini-expedition, in which he was with his scientific adviser, Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Geography Mykola Udovichenko.

We want to emphasize that the Department of Geography for many years under the leadership of Mykola Udovichenko has been fruitfully working at a scientific school in geology and paleontology. And it was thanks to his efforts that after the evacuation, expositions and a geological museum were opened.

At the Department of Laboratory Diagnostics, Chemistry and Biochemistry, master’s students and teachers of chemists are working on the topic “Double Functionalization of 2-Halogen-Substituted Salts of Krionke. Stereo and regioselectivity (specificity) of these transformations” (state registration number – 0116U005510). According to the results of many years of research, the Assistant Professor of the Department Natalia Tverdokhleb (scientific adviser – Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor Hennadii Khoroshilov) this year defended the thesis for the degree of candidate of chemical sciences.

The sectional session “Technology and Medical Diagnostics of Oncological Diseases” within the framework of “Days of Science 2020” was held on April 28, 2020 online using the Zoom platform. The conference was attended by the first-fourth year students majoring in “Technologies of Medical Diagnosis and Treatment.” The works dealt with issues of the features of histochemical studies, biochemical analyzes and their importance in the laboratory diagnosis of cancer. Speakers, conference participants demonstrated a high level of fundamental training and good oratorical abilities.

On April 25, 2020, the Department of Gardening and Ecology held the sectional meeting “Science Days 2020” online using the Zoom platform. Teachers, students and master’s students joined the discussion of scientific reports. Using the Zoom platform, students not only became listeners, but also active participants who presented and vividly discussed the reports.

The topic of the speeches was diverse and revealed topical issues that teachers, master’s students and students of the department are working on. During the event, the participants demonstrated the operation of the Grin Test mini Eco eco-tester device and analyzed the results.

All reports were accompanied by an active discussion with the speaker, teachers and students.

Despite the harsh quarantine measures, students and teachers were able to discuss the issue of scientific research of the departments.

We wish all participants creative inspiration for further scientific work! We look forward to new research results from our young scientists.
