Conference “Luhansk Region: Local Lore Exploration”

Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University held the Scientific and Practical Conference “Luhansk Region: Local Lore Explorationˮ.

Despite the quarantine, on April 23, 2020, the traditional Scientific and Practical Conference “Luhansk Region: Local Lore Exploration”, co-organized by the Luhansk Regional Organization of the National Union of Local Lore of Ukraine, State Institution “Luhansk Tarasa Shevchenko National University”, Department of Historical Heritage JSC, Ukrainian Railwaysˮ took place. Compliance with quarantine measures led to the correspondence of the event, however, despite the inconvenience, both its old friends and partners, as well as new scientists, took part in the conference.

Among the participants with experience was the chairman of the Luhansk Regional Organization of the National Union of Local Lore of Ukraine, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Chairman of the Academic Council of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University Vitalii Kurylo. The scientist focused on the process of updating the structure of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University at the beginning of the XXI century. His report was an analysis of the main achievements and prospects for the development of Luhansl Taras Shevchenko National University, on the eve of the 99th anniversary of its founding.

The speaker noted the dynamism and effectiveness of the development of the educational institution at the present stage, as evidenced by, in particular, the formation of local history science on its basis.

The theme of the history of his native university was continued by Anatolii Klimov, Ph.D. in History, Professor of the Department of History of Ukraine, who focused on highlighting the main achievements of the leading higher educational institution of the Luhansk region during its almost hundred-year history.

The traditional partner of the Luhansk regional organization of the National Union of Local Lore of Ukraine – the engineer of the 1st category of the Department of Historical Heritage of Railways of Ukraine of the Department of Corporate Social Responsibility of JSC Ukrainian Railways Mykola Ruban presented a report that reveals the features of the historical development of the Luhansk locomotive depot in 1878-1957.

The report “From the Treasury of Pedagogical Creativity: Methodological Achievements (from the experience of a literary teacher of the Kreminna school-gymnasium Tamara O. Umanska) was made by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Literature, Dean of the Faculty of Ukrainian Philology and Social Communications Tetiana Pinchuk. The report was devoted to the urgent aspects of pedagogical work in the Luhansk region. 

Among the scientific achievements of the conference debutants, one can single out the report of the leading Luhansk archaeologist, researcher at the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Serhii Telizhenko, “Examination of the Mound Group to the North-West of the Novoselivka village (Starobilsk district of the Luhansk region)ˮ, co-written with the Doctor of History, Head of the Department of History of Ukraine Oleksandr Naboka. The material presented in it is the result of an archaeological study of a group of Bronze Age barrows located near the village of Novoselivka, Starobilsk District, conducted jointly by the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Department of History of Ukraine of LTSNU in July 2019.

The report of the Director of the Luhansk Regional Museum of Local Lore Olesia Milovanova, in which the scientist focused on the coverage of the strategy of re-profiling local history museums in the context of tourism development in the Luhansk region, was of interest. Representatives of the museum industry of the Luhansk region are long-standing partners of the conference. Among the speakers who made interesting and relevant reports, in particular, we can single out Oksana Bakshinska, an employee of the Luhansk Museum of Local Lore, and Olena Sukhorada, a leading specialist in museum affairs in the Novopskov district.

The highlight of this year’s conference was a large number of students who made presentations on various relevant topics of local history. The debutants of the conference, in particular, were the students  T. Veretsun, A. Golikov, M. Goncharov, a student of the FNS D. Lebedev. Among the representatives of students who were active in the scientific field, they had already taken part in the event in previous years, V. Klimenko, A. Sykalo, Yu. Shevtsova and others shared their scientific achievements.

The event also featured the scientific research of young local historians, students of “LOMANUM”. Taking this opportunity, the organizers of the conference express their gratitude to the scientific advisers, who, despite the need to prepare their own interesting reports, find time to advise students. This, in particular, Olha Zabudkova, Candidate of Historical Sciences, senior lecturer of the Department of History of Ukraine and Olha Bublik, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Political Science and Law.

So, the successful holding the scientific and practical conference “Luhansk Region: Local History Exploration” indicates that despite objective difficulties, local history science in the Luhansk region is developing quite dynamically. Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University is one of the main flagships of this development, concentrating around itself leading scientists and beginners studying the history of their native land.
