World AIDS Day

A number of events dedicated to World AIDS Day were held at Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University.

Employees of the university’s social service with representatives of the Red Cross International Defense Ministry held a series of events dedicated to World AIDS Day. Since December 1, 1988, informational events have been held annually around the world, and people talk about how to protect yourself from this terrible disease.

According to the World Health Organization, about 37 million people live in the world with HIV infection, among which 19.5 million receive antiretroviral treatment. Ukraine remains a region with a high HIV prevalence. According to the Joint United Nations Program on HIV / AIDS, about 244 thousand Ukrainians have HIV, of which 100 thousand do not know about their disease.

The symbol of this day is a red ribbon. All people dress it in lapels of jackets, hats and caps as a sign of the joint efforts of people against this disease.

For students of our university, the head of the student social service Olena Dukhova and the head of the skin and venereological dispensary Oleksandr Rud gave a lecture. Oleksandr talked about this disease and means of preservation. He noted that AIDS is not a sentence; you can live with it and even enjoy life. In the end, everyone present handed out red ribbons as a symbol of the fight against AIDS and means of protection.

In the evening, employees, teachers and students of our university held an action as a sign of memory of those killed by AIDS. In the beginning, the Director of the Starobilsk District Center of Social Services for Family, Children and Youth Larysa Krasiuk spoke about the history of the foundation and significance of such actions. In memory of the victims, all those present laid candles on a red ribbon.

The events that were held on this day symbolize the Day of Remembrance and Relocation of the Consciousness of People, Protection from Bad Habits and Unnecessary Connections.

Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
