National Flag Day of Ukraine
23.8.2019
Lecturers, staff and students of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University celebrated the National Flag Day.
Today, on August 23, due to the celebration of Ukraine’s National Flag Day, a flag-raising ceremony took place at the university courtyard where were the state flag, the flag of the European Union and the flag of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University.
The national flag is a symbol of the spirit and freedom of our country, a symbol uniting Ukrainians around the world as well as the embodiment of the unity and power of the nation. The main idea of the blue and yellow flag is clear sky – a symbol of peace and a wheat field – a symbol of prosperity.
The European flag is a symbol of the unification of the peoples of Europe. Twelve golden stars shine on it, symbolizing perfection, completeness and unity.
The flag of our university shows a symbol of wisdom – an owl. The words from the “Testament” by Taras Shevchenko are written on the blue circle – “… Study foreign things and do not forget national ones …”. The inscription is surrounded by golden rays of the sun – a symbol of the east of Ukraine. All this is located on a white cartouche, an ancient manuscript that was used in antiquity during the wedding of ancient Greek philosophers, scientists, artists.
The honorary right to raise the flag of Ukraine, the flag of the European Union and the flag of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University was granted to students: Valerii Pyzhov, Vlad Rusanov and Stanislav Zaichenko. During the performance of the Anthem of Ukraine, these three flags were littered near our Alma Mater.
Our flag is inextricably linked with the heroic history of the Ukrainian people, the desire for independence and the struggle for national and social rights.
At the ceremony, special attention was paid to the Flag, which was pierced by bullets and shell splinters. It contains the blood of the fighters of the 80th airmobile brigade, led by Andrii Kovalchuk, who in 2014 defended the Luhansk Airport from the Russian occupation forces. We respectfully keep the Flag and honor those who gave their lives for the freedom of our native land.
Glory to our heroes, glory to our native Ukraine!
