Representatives of the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology participated in a training on human-centered design and design thinking.
Olena Karaman, Director of the Educational and Research Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology, and Liudmyla Varianytsia, Associate Professor of the Department of Preschool and Primary Education, became participants in a five-day training session on human centered design and design thinking, which took place from June 10 to June 14 in the picturesque city of Vyshgorod near Kyiv.
The training took place on the territory of the “Sobi Club” – a modern space for recreation, ceremonial and entertainment events, conferences, trainings, round tables, which is located in a pine forest on the banks of the river Dnipro.
The design thinking training was organized with the support of the project “Reform of Governance in Eastern Ukraine II”, carried out by the German government company Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. The main goal of the training was to train participants to use the tools of a human-oriented approach and design thinking to solve a complex of problems in various spheres of human activity, encouraging innovations that meet the needs of people and society.
The trainer was Fiona Myles, a design missionary and strategist from the UK. Fiona has over 20 years of experience in this field, has lectured on design thinking at Imperial College London and at the University of the Arts London, is a partner, trainer and facilitator of the Design Thinking Academy, the British Design Council and the Nesta company, as well as the founder of Kin.
Design thinking is a successful global methodology for creating innovations, it is actively used in the work of companies such as Facebook, Google, Apple, Procter & Gamble, Samsung, IBM, IKEA. Design thinking courses are an important part of the educational process at Stanford University and other leading universities in the world. In Ukraine, until now, only the best business schools were taught for a narrow and well-to-do audience. Today, thanks to GIZ, the scientists of our university have taken a course.
In addition to participants from Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University, the training program was attended by representatives of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, local authorities, Centers for the provision of administrative services from different parts of Ukraine, including Severodonetsk and Lysychansk.
For five days, step by step, the participants of the training plunged into design thinking, mastering the essence, content, algorithm and tools of its use in accordance with their own professional sphere.
At the end of the training, both team and individual innovative products were presented.
Olena Karaman and Liudmyla Varianytsia presented to the audience a theoretical model of the design-thinking technology of future primary school teachers for its further introduction into the educational process in the specialty Primary Education.
The final event was the presentation of certificates to all participants of the training, exchange of contacts, and a general photo.
According to Olena Karaman and Liudmyla Varianytsia, design thinking is not quite the usual methodology for our scientists to solve problems and create an innovative product, since it is not based on analytical thinking and critical analysis, but on the creative process, during which even unexpected ideas lead to effective problem solving. Therefore, the technology of design thinking will be very useful in working with students to solve a wide variety of pedagogical tasks and problems.
Participation in domestic and international projects, trainings, programs is not only new knowledge, practices and experience, the possibility of self-improvement, it is also the establishment of new communications, and the ability to assess and self-assess your own professional activities, present the university at different levels, and see the university’s place in educational and scientific space and the like.
