Meeting of the Youth Club of Oriental Cultures

A regular meeting of the Youth Club of Oriental Cultures took place at the Faculty of Foreign Languages.

The meeting was devoted to the discussion of the formula of happiness. Students were asked to recall the proverbs of happiness in their native language, and then in foreign languages. Students provided a lot of interesting examples, among them were: Everyone is a blacksmith of his happiness. He, who does not see grief, does not know happiness. There would be no happiness, but misfortune helped. No one knows when happiness will smile to him. True happiness is always ahead. Happiness runs for courage.

Then Fedicheva N.V. noted that the concept of “happiness” is multifaceted and therefore difficult to systematize. She then introduced the students to PERMA’s formula of happiness, which was proposed by the American researcher, psychologist, and founder of positive psychology Martin Seligman in the fundamental work of 2011, “Flourish”. The formula consists of 5 elements: Positive Emotions, Engagement, Positive Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment.  Next, Fedicheva N.V. explained each element of the formula. About the concept of happiness was also speaking a guest from China, Jaylee Wu. He stressed that according to the Chinese philosophers, it is possible to distinguish five main segments of happiness: health, career, longevity, joy and wealth.

In ancient China, it was thought that happiness is a gift of heaven and ancestors. This conclusion can be made by analyzing the writing of the word according to the Chinese etymological dictionary “Sicho Hanji”.
