Excellence in Internationalisation and ESP in Higher Education

At the end of November, the three-day symposium “Excellence in Internationalisation and ESP in Higher Education” was held in Kyiv.
The symposium was attended by heads of departments of foreign languages from 32 universities. Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University (LNU) was represented by dean of the faculty of foreign languages Shehavtsova S.O. and Head of the Chair of Oriental Languages Fedicheva N.V.
LNU joined the project “English for Universities” in 2016, and during this time a lot has been done in terms of improving ESP teaching. Teachers from our university attended the British Council trainings, and held presentations, seminars and workshops that were aimed at mastering the modern approaches to teaching English.
Before the symposium, an independent consultant, Professor Simon Borg and Zhanna Sevast’yanova, British Council Project Manager, visited universities in different parts of Ukraine to see how the project works and how it changed the approaches to teaching. At our university Professor Simon Borg attended eight classes and interviewed the dean of the faculty of foreign languages Shehavtsova S.O., departments heads, faculty and students.
Feodicheva N.V. reported on the achievements of the University and the Faculty in the framework of the participation in the project. She reported on the changes that took place during, outlined the existing difficulties / challenges and the ways to resolve / overcome them.
Participants discussed the plans for further work on the last day of the symposium. Representatives of LNU Shehavtsova S.O. and Fedicheva N.V. revised the already existing plan of action (Action plan) and outlined the tasks for the future.
