Basketball Traditions of LNU

Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University is famed for its basketball traditions. Famous trainers and sportsmen have studied and worked at our university at different times.

One has only to think about V.P. Shovhur – the founder of basketball school of the university, Honored Trainer of Ukraine V.I. Ryzhov, the head coach of the national team of Ukraine – Champions of Europe, Yu. P. Velihura, V.P. Briukhovetskyi, Yu.O. Podkolzin, coaches of national team of Ukraine.

So it is no surprise that our university has initiated the first regional tournament for prizes of Luhansk Regional Department (the Chairman – Yu. M. Poluliashchenko) and Rubizhne City Department (the Chairman – V.V. Dubovoi) of fitness and sports society “Spartak”. The tournament was aimed to gather all basketball players who live in Lysychansk, Sievierodonetsk, Rubizhne, Kreminna or surroundings within one competition.

The tournament was bright and busy. Six teams were among participants without regard to place of residence or department. Teams consisted of sportsmen from different cities. It made them stronger and unpredictable.

At the first stage round-robin tournament defined four teams which played for prizes. Thus, the teams of ICT (Institute of Chemical Technologies) and “Business” played “small final” (a game for 3-4 places). Till the end of the second quarter the game was head-to-head. But after big break ICT managed to step up and win. The game for the first place was similar. Till the half a game a team of our university had small advantage. But after the brake more experienced players of LNU made the game by their rules. Our sportsmen became the winners of the regional tournament with a score of 78:56. Besides, our students Vlad Kurylenko and Serhii Potomkin took the first places among kickers.

The tournament was organized at the excellent level. The Chairman of Luhansk Regional Department of FSS “Spartak”, Honored Trainer of Ukraine, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences Yu. M. Poluliashchneko is a director of IPES of LNU and the Chairman of Rubizhne Department is a graduate of IPES. Yu.O. Podkolzin, Head of Department of Sports Disciplines, and Dubovoi A.V., teacher of the Department of Olympic and Professional Sports, took active part in the tournament organization. These people made the competitions bright and influential in sports way. Superfinal and “small” final were conducted in the beautiful Rubizhne Palace of Sports of LNU in the presence of a lot of fans. Winners were awarded with a cup and diplomas by competition organizers.
