Day of Dignity and Freedom

An event dedicated to two significant events in the history of Ukraine was held in the Starobilsk Youth Library.

On November 21, Ukrainians celebrate one of the new, but iconic holidays in the history of Ukraine – the Day of Dignity and Freedom. It is celebrated annually in accordance with the Presidential Decree of November 13, 2014 and is set in honor of the beginning of two momentous events in the newest Ukrainian history: the Orange Revolution of 2004 and the Revolution of Dignity of 2013.

It was on November 21, 2013 that the first protest actions of the Ukrainian public began in response to the decision of the authorities to stop the course towards European integration and cancel the process of preparing for the signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union. The events unfolded rapidly and dramatically: from peaceful gatherings of students to mass rallies, burning tires, Molotov cocktails and paving stones, which became a weapon in the hands of the protesters. But the most tragic thing was that in defending dignity and freedom, 106 Ukrainians gave their lives and even more than 2 thousand were injured.

The event was attended by second- and third-year students majoring in “Social Work” of the Educational and Research Institute of History, International Relations and Socio-Political Sciences of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University. They watched the TV spot “Ukraine: for the Sake of the Future” and the documentary film “In Unity – Power”, and had access to the thematic literature.

The main thing is to remember, honor and respect, teach and tell how it was and why.
