In search of the Triassic flora

At the end of September, students-geographers of LTSNU went in search of the Triassic flora in the Kharkiv region.

An important role in the preparation of future geographers at Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University is played by field research, the experience of which students receive during training practices. Scientific expeditions, in which students are involved, are even more valuable for the formation of professional competencies. Such expeditions are carried out within the framework of the research problems of the Geography Department (the Faculty of Natural Sciences).

At the end of September, a five-day expedition to the Kharkiv region was organized to carry out exploratory paleontological work in the village of Velyka Kamyshuvakha. The expedition was headed by Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Geography Department N.I. Udovichenko. It was attended by three second-year students majoring in “Secondary Education (Geography)” Pavlo Leonov, Ihor Fedorov and Anatolii Tsyuryukanov.

The main objective of the field research was the discovery of the rich location of the prints of plants and insects of the Triassic period (about 200 million years ago), which was described by the famous Ukrainian paleobotanist F. A. Stanislavsky in his monograph in 1976. Unfortunately, the information on the exact location of the section mentioned in the monograph was lost, so the expedition members planned to reopen this section. As a result of the search, they together with the Kharkiv local historians managed to do this. The detailed work on the study of this exposure and the extraction of actual material are scheduled to be held next year.

During the expedition, the students enjoyed the search process, gained valuable experience in conducting field research. The found paleontological material can already become the basis for their preparation of course and scientific works on geology and paleontology.
