Excursion to the Sviatogorsk Lavra
12.10.2018
Students, lecturers and staff of the Institute of Physical Education and Sports conducted an interesting excursion to the Sviatogorsk Lavra.
Sviatogorsk Lavra is located in the small city of Sviatogorsk along the coast of the Seversky Donets river.
The architectural ensemble of Lavra has not changed since its foundation. Under the temple is the entrance to the cave, where pilgrims lived in the distant XVII century. We were lucky to have got there on the tour. The exclusiveness is that there is no light at all in the caves, so each visitor is given a candle with which he must walk to the exit from the cave. The caves are very narrow passages and low ceilings, so you had to walk very carefully. Going upstairs, we saw a picturesque view of the wide Donets and the dense forests surrounding the Holy Mountains, and the chapel of St. Andrei Pervozvannyi completes the hike with caves.
Then the tour continued to the monument to Artem, as well as to the place of residence of the monks – a wooden All Saints skete, which rather resembles an architectural monument. Also we visited the Assumption Cathedral, the type of interior of which were delighted. We purchased souvenirs and icons for memory in the souvenir shop.
In general, the tour made a great impression on the views of the Holy Mountains and on the Sviatogosk Lavra.
