World Vyshyvanka Day

Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University celebrated World Vyshyvanka Day.

Every year, the third Thursday of May, Ukraine celebrates World Vyshyvanka Day – a national unity holiday, which is designed to preserve national folk traditions and unite Ukrainians around vyshyvanka, which is not only a symbol of beauty, youth, imitation, but also our genetic code.

Vyshyvanka Day – a holiday flashmob, when Ukrainians on a weekday wear embroidered shirts to demonstrate the unity of the Ukrainian people.

This holiday is traditional for the students and staff of LTSNU. Every year on Vyshyvanka Day, a number of patriotic events take place at the University, which are designed to preserve Ukrainian values and popularize them among young people. This academic year was no exception.

The Day began with the contest “Native house in vyshyvanka”, participation in which was accepted by university students living in a hostel. In the morning, restless youth began preparations for the event, because the necessary condition for participation was a room decorated in a traditional Ukrainian style. Thanks to the diligence of students, the university building soon began to stand out prominently among others, as towels appeared on the windows of the hostel, as a symbol of hospitality and goodwill. Participants greeted guests with bread and salt, interestingly represented their own dwelling and shared a festive mood. After summing up the results, the jury determined the winners, who were awarded with valuable gifts.

The one more traditional action on this day is the event “Born in Vyshyvanka.”Today, the staff of our University donated national clothes to the newborn in Starobilsk maternity ward. On this festive day, the happy parents of two boys and two girls received wonderful embroidered shirts from students and teachers of LNUTS for their children, who will become their symbol of belonging to the Ukrainian family.

The celebration ended with a concert “Ukraine-Vyshyvanka, during which all the friendly family of LTSNU gathered on the university square. Ukrainian songs were performed by the best LTSNU artists. Choreographic groups pleased the audience with incendiary dances.

The Rector of the University Serhii Savchenko congratulated all those present. “Ukrainian vyshyvanka is a national shrine! It symbolizes and carries in itself spiritual wealth, high wisdom and traditional connection of many generations. This is our national amulet! World Vyshyvanka Day will be supported in more than 50 countries. Let this holiday erase the border and unite Ukrainians around the world,” – the Rector said.

The Dean of the Faculty of Ukrainian Philology and Social Communications Tetiana Pinchuk noted that vyshyvanka is a national shrine, the genetic code of Ukrainians, because it symbolizes and carries in itself spiritual wealth. Vyshyvanka is transferred from genus to clan, stored as a relic. This is not just clothing and a fashionable trend, it is the soul of the Ukrainian nation, it is a symbol of health and beauty, happiness and family memory, love and loyalty.

The action “Born in Vyshyvanka” continued during the concert. The Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work Oleksandr Babichev presented the first embroidered shirts to the children of university employees who were born this year.

During the event, the results of the competitions “Vyshyvanka with Your Own Hands” and “The Colors are Intertwined with a Rainbow” were summed up. The best works of all the competitions were awarded with gifts, which were provided by the Primary Trade Union Organization of the University.

Vyshyvanka is not just clothing. It is a guard that unites those who respects the rich traditions of the Ukrainian people, glorifies invaluable cultural treasures in the vastness of our country and far beyond its borders.

We are proud to be Ukrainians; we are united in a big family by love for our native land, for our people, for vyshyvanka.
