Memory of the Chernobyl Disaster

Students and teachers of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University marked the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day.

The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has become the most widespread technogenic catastrophe in world history. The terrible events of April 1986 forced everyone to realize their own responsibility for the preservation of the environment. And most of the trials fell on the liquidators, who, despite the threat to their own lives and health, saved the world community from a global tragedy.

Today, a requiem meeting, dedicated to the tragic events, was held near the memorial sign to the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. The event was also attended by students of the Regional Center for Vocational Education of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University.

Honored guests were present at the event; among them was the first deputy chairman of the Starobilsk District State Administration A.S. Kalinin, Deputy Chairman of the Starobilsk District State Administration E.A. Grigorenko, Deputy Chairman of the Starobilsk District Council S.A. Domarev, chairman of the public organization of veterans and invalids “Union of Chernobyl of Ukraine” S.I. Cherednichenko.

The event began with the Chernobyl anthem – a song that symbolizes the courage and heroism of the liquidators, their love of life. All those present could feel the spiritual closeness in prayer during the prayer service for the fallen heroes, conducted by the Archpriest Father Volodymyr Solovey.

The First Deputy Chairman of the Starobilsk District State Administration A.S. Kalinin addressed the participants with a solemn speech. He thanked the liquidators present at the event for their feat and wished peace and health to all participants of the event. Honoring the memory of fellow compatriots who perished in the disaster,  Oleksandr Semenovych declared a minute of silence.

The meeting was addressed by the chairman of the public organization “Chernobyl Union” S.I. Cherednichenko and the teacher-organizer of the Starobilsk School No. 4 M. Tsygulyova. They told about the main events of April 1986, the scale of pollution and noted that the memory of this disaster is the responsibility of every modern citizen.

Touching and heartfelt became a dance performed by the youth of Starobilsk land. The children embodied pain and suffering from the radiation threat that hung over our homeland in the creative room. Reading the memory of fellow countrymen who passed away during the past year, the disciples released pigeons into the sky.

The end of the event was the laying of flowers to the memorial sign to the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster from representatives of the Starobilsk District State Administration, the District Council, the City Council and grateful citizens.

292 residents of Starobilsk took part in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. Their exploit became a symbol of indestructibility and courage, and those terrible events will remain forever in the memory of the people.
