BookCrossing “Book BOOM”

From December 1 to 13, the project “BookCrossing “Book BOOM” was realized in the city of Starobilsk within the framework of the program “Active Citizens” with the support of the British Council.

The team of the initiative group, which continues to work on the project, includes employees of the Luhansk Regional Library named after M. Gorky and students of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University. The aim of BookCrossing, as the project manager Anastasia Litashova says, is to create a platform for free exchange of literature by installing bookcasing cabinets at the University and the Regional Library for quests, thematic evenings and literary association “Literary BOOM” meetings.

Also part of the project were entertainment and cognitive activities that were designed to attract young people to reading and exchanging views and destroy in them a stereotype that the book is a waste of time.

So, for three months, librarians arranged theme nights and literary discussions. During the “Literary BOOM” students, together with librarians, discussed postmodernism in all its manifestations. An important stage of the meeting was the identification of the students’ personal attitude to Ukrainian literature, including the modern one. Students shared why they often choose foreign literature. Concerning the literature of postmodernism, everyone listed those read works that pleased each other.

The following event was dedicated to the eightieth anniversary of the book by J. Tolkien “The Hobbit, or There and Back.” Librarians arranged a party for admirers of the writer’s creativity with cognitive facts, competitions, drawings and book gifts.

The librarians named the final thematic event within the framework of the project “Mad Tea Party”. Fans of the book “Alice in Wonderland” gathered here this time: viewing a retro film of 1933, discussing it, playing games and tea with sweets – so the evening passed in the library.

Today, the Luhansk Regional Library already has a painted metal cabinet filled with books for free exchange. The initiative group hopes that the citizens will accept the idea of the project and join it.

“I think that everyone, who loves reading, has a lot of books at home. BookCrossing is a good opportunity not only to get rid of old books, but to get others in return,” – Vladislav Kolesnik, a regular guest of BookCrossing events, says.

The postgraduate student of Luhansk National University Oleksandr Litashov is convinced: “BookCrossing is a completely new phenomenon in our city. It is a good start for the intellectual enrichment of adults, adolescents and children. “
