Within the framework of the above-mentioned project, the head of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology, S.O. Shekhavtsova was invited to participate in the Symposium, which took place from the 7th to the 9th of December in 2017.

She presented the results of the implementation of specially designed curriculum “English for specific purposes”, which was developed by a group of heads of departments from different universities of Ukraine, including the participation of the head of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology.

The presentation included the successful achievements of all departments, faculties and institutes of the university during a year and a half from the beginning of LNU’s participation in this project. In particular, this project inspired the study and implementation of bilingual teaching of Physics at the University. A number of events were organized to implement bilingual teaching with the first-year students of the field of study “Secondary Education (Mathematics. Physics)” and with the second-year students of the field of study “Secondary Education (Physics. Informatics)”. Also, the first-year students of the field of study “Laboratory Diagnosis” are currently preparing the project PET@CAT, which includes an analysis of English literature on diagnostic equipment using CERN materials, concerning the use of elementary particle research in the treatment of cancer.

After passing some free online courses offered by the British Council in 2016, the students of various specialties began participating actively in scientific conferences and presenting their reports in English. The student of the MA course of the field of study “Marketing”, N. Baklanova, took part in the forum “Widening Our Horizons”, which was held in Dnipropetrovsk in April, 2017. Furthermore, the first-year student of the field of study “Secondary education (Mathematics. Physics)”, M. Lysko, submitted the theses “The use of modern digital equipment and PC in physical experiment” to the Second All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conference of students, postgraduates and young scientists “Current problems of humanitarian, technical and natural sciences”, that was organized in Vinnitsa on the 16th-17th of November in 2017.

Two joint projects are being prepared now by the Deputy Director for Educational Work at the Educational and Scientific Institute of Economics and Business, L.I. Bondarenko, and the Deputy Director for Social and Humanitarian Work of the Institute of Physics, Mathematics, and Information Technologies, V.V. Matievsky, who have participated actively in the project “English for Universities” for EMI teachers. Thanks to the project, L.I. Bondarenko has the opportunity to take part in the grant program for which it is necessary to develop an English language course on modern developments and achievements in Physics.

Teachers of the Department of Oriental Languages and the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology of Faculty of Foreign Languages who teach ESP “English for specific purposes” have developed a special questionnaire, the efficiency of which has been statistically validated by the results of the involvement of both teachers and students in the project “English for Universities” at the university.

The plan of future actions was discussed at the symposium, regarding the role and status of the English language in higher education institutions, the dissemination of the results of our university and the history of cooperation with other Ukrainian universities.
