Open Access Week
30.10.2017
The International Open Access Week was held at Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University.
Open access to educational materials, realized for any user in the global information network, opens wide opportunities for knowledge, self-development and scientific activity. The International Open Access Week allows better understanding the benefits of this concept, sharing experiences, ideas for its implementation and helping to broaden the circle of participants in this movement.
Teachers, staff and students of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University joined the international action, and in the scientific library of our educational institution a number of events were held devoted to the current model.
During the opening of the International Open Access Week, those present were congratulated by the Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work Oleksandr Meniailenko and the Acting Director of the Scientific Library of LTSNU M.M. Pochinkova. They talked about the history of this movement, which has been held for 10 consecutive years, its advantages, and also reported on the possibility of access to free, high-speed, permanent, real-time content via open databases.
Within the framework of the International Open Access Week in the Scientific Library meetings with teachers were held. Thus, K.M. Kotyentets held a seminar “Comparative studies and their results.” She spoke about major international projects (TIMSS, PIRLS, PISA, TALIS), websites and databases that are publicly available and can help students and teachers in the learning process.
During the seminar “Databases in Scientific Research” Lina Bondarenko told about the importance of self-determination in the scientific field. She focused on skills that students should develop in themselves, gave examples from their own life experiences and identified important CV points.
Our University is not limited to this week alone. The activation of open access will continue. In particular, the cooperation of students and teachers with Wikimedia; conducting seminars with world-class experts on openness, registering our repository in global databases and the like. Successful introduction of open access to the activity of the higher educational institution will become the key to the development of the newest trends in the sphere of educational services.
