Tour of Poltava

On the ninth of September a walking tour of Poltava was held at the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University in honor of the birthday of the great outstanding Ukrainian writer Ivan Petrovich Kotlyarevsky.

The tour was attended by students and teachers of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology. Both freshmen and those who have already studied and lived in Poltava for several years have discovered this city in a new way. It was especially interesting for foreign students, who are just beginning their acquaintance with our culture, history and literature.

Today we learned that Poltava has a rich history. The city is full of historical monuments of architecture, which no one guessed. In general, students learned a lot of interesting things, for example, that the central square in Poltava is the only one in the world that has the shape of the sun or that the local history museum, that is well-known to all Poltava citizens, is the first example of the architectural Ukrainian modern art.

Poltava is the source of famous writers, artists and cultural figures. It was home to Panas Mirnyj, one of the most famous Ukrainian writers. A great discovery was the monument of Taras Shevchenko. As if to the eternal symbol of our university, our students clung to the pedestal, which symbolizes the image of a fighter for the freedom and social justice of Ukrainian people.

But the main part of the tour was the estate of Ivan Kotlyarevsky. It was here where Ivan Petrovich was born. The years of his life with his family passed also in Poltava. He created his best works in this picturesque city and died here. His monument is situated in Poltava, but the main thing is his heritage, reflected in his timeless works, which have given our nation the father of the modern Ukrainian language for life.
