International Teacher Weeks Programme
4.9.2017
A teacher of LTSNU visited CERN within the International Teacher Weeks Programme 2017.
International Teacher Weeks Programme 2017 was held at the initiative of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). It was designed for high school science teachers who want to update knowledge on physics of elementary particles and technologies associated with them. According to the organizers, the participants of the program should transfer the acquired knowledge to their students, colleagues and the general public, which will make it possible to popularize the important role of science, in particular the physics of elementary particles.
44 people from 37 countries of the world became participants of the international program. The only representative of Ukraine at the event was the teacher of the Educational and Research Institute of Economy and Business Lina Bondarenko. This event became a landmark in her life, opened wide opportunities for broadening the horizon and gaining new knowledge.
“International Teacher Weeks Programme” lasted from August 6 to 19. During this time, the participants attended lecture classes, research facilities, exhibitions and master classes. All events took place in the territory of the high energy physics research center CERN, which is located on the border between France and Switzerland.
During the lectures, leading European scientists discussed topical physics issues and focused their attention on problems that need to be addressed. Particular attention was paid to the use of elementary particle physics for the treatment of oncological diseases.
It was interesting master class in the laboratory S’Cool LAB – the research center for physical education, which created an experimental site for student research. Students and teachers who are engaged in scientific activities and have certain achievements visit by S’Sool LAB and receive the necessary skills of working with modern equipment.
During the program, visits were made to important research facilities, including CMS (one of the detectors of the Large Hadron Collider, ELENA (compact ring for cooling and further slowing down of antiprotons), ISOLDE (online isotope mass separator).
Being in the CERN research center, the participants of the program met with Nobel laureates – Maria and Giuseppe Fidecaro.
Among the attractions that visited Lina Bondarenko, being in the European organization for nuclear research, is the office in which the author of the World Wide Web project Tim Berners-Lee worked. The results of the hard work of the scientist became the basis of the Internet network, which is now popular all over the world. Noting the contribution to the development of information technology, CERN has a memorial sign in honor of the outstanding scientist.
According to the results of participation in the International Teacher Weeks Programme participants had to develop and present a scientific project in certain areas. Lina Bondarenko together with colleagues from other countries presented a project on cosmology. Its main components were the analysis of the teaching of the selected topic in different countries of the world, the search for new and interesting resources and the demonstration of the best teaching experience.
Lina Igorivna recalled the project manager Jeff Wiener, who made efforts to organize a cognitive event, with special words of gratitude.
Strengthening international relations and uniting scientists around current scientific problems is one of the main objectives of the program. After the International Teacher Weeks Programme, participants continue to communicate through social networks and discuss the actual problems of elementary particle physics. Scientists believe that the key to success in unity and hard work is to solve common problems.
