Meeting of the Academic Council
28.2.2015
A meeting of the Academic Council was held on February 28 at Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University.
Several issues were considered during the meeting: about the 94th anniversary of LNU foundation, about the results of the university educational activity in the first semester of 2014 – 2015 and the features of educational process in the second semester of 2014 – 2015, about the results of Dissertation Councils activity in 2014.
The Head of the Department of Quality Management of Educational Process Planning Valentyna Liesnova reported on the results of the university educational activity in the first semester of 2014 – 2015 and the features of educational process in the second semester of 2014 – 2015. The reporter noted that in the first semester the university had organized the educational process for all training directions.
Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University had to start 2014 – 2015 academic year in the conditions of temporary location at the premises of Starobilsk Faculty.
So the educational process in the first semester combined different forms of education. At the first stage there were simple technologies for remote education: email, social networking websites and cloud technologies. Step by step, within a short time, the educational activity was transferred to the platform of remote education by applying SMS and holding the visiting sessions in stationary state. The lectures, seminars, practical and laboratory trainings were organized for the students of all institutes and faculties during 11 weeks. The website was created using moodle platform to organize remote education. More than 10 000 students are registered on it. More than 3 000 remote courses are created. There is a coordinator-tutor for each specialty. You can use a hot line of remote education. Stationary training was organized for all specialties of the Institute of Physical Education and Sports and for “Choreography” and “Laboratory Diagnostics” specialties.
The organization of remote education is better at the Faculty of Ukrainian Philology and Social Communications, the Institute of Post-Qualifying Education and Remote Training and the Institute of History, International Communications and Socio-Political Sciences. The Institute of Trade, Service Technologies and Tourism and the Institute of Physics, Mathematics and Information Technologies has the most of all problems. Some of their specialties have a low activity of students at the website of remote education.
Visiting sessions in stationary state are the best at the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology and at the Institute of History, International Communications and Socio-Political Sciences where the teachers and tutors managed to organize a coming of significant number of students. Students’ activity was law at the Institute of Physics, Mathematics and Information Technologies and at the Faculty of Foreign Languages.
There was a questionnaire survey to find out students’ opinion about educational process in the first semester. It was performed via “LimeSurvey” service where 560 persons took part. Its results show that the students understand the objective difficulties and in general they are satisfied with education organization. The main problems during the first semester are the following: unstable access to the Internet, tight deadlines for the tasks, their own ill-preparedness for self-organization, difficulties with connection establishment with the teachers, impossibility to come to sessions, etc. The students gave mark 3.8 out of 5 for the education process in the first semester.
A state attestation was held during December 2014 – January 2015 at the university for 300 graduates, 64 of which obtained master diplomas, 58 – bachelors diplomas, 139 – specialist diplomas and 92 – junior specialist diplomas. State attestation results showed a high level of the university graduates.
There was the All-Ukrainian action to help a library after which the university received 466 copies of educational books in paper form and 6634 ones in electronic format.
There were some problems with education organization in the first semester at the university: the necessity to redevelop teaching resources for many courses; insufficient efficiency of monitoring remote education quality; insufficient number of existing remote courses; the content of educational materials doesn’t always satisfy the program requirements and the form of its feeding isn’t always adapted to the self-guided work, etc.
In the light of the foregoing Temporary Regulation on educational process organization for the second semester was prepared.
So, having considered and discussed the issue, the Academic Council approved Temporary Regulation on Educational Process Organization for the Second Semester and Regulation on Creation and Work Organization of Examination Committee.
Prorector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work Dmytro Uzhchenko reported on the competition issue. So Psychology Doctor of Pedagogic Sciences, docent Olena Karaman was chosen for the position of the director of the Institute of Pedagogy and Doctor of Pedagogic Sciences, docent Serhii Roman was chosen for the position of professor at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Also at the meeting the Academic Council approves a list of persons for appointing a title of Honorary Professor, awarding Honorary Certificate of the university and Diploma “The Best Student of the University”.
