The Department of Biology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences laid out the experimental and demonstration plots.
Corn is a grain with great opportunities. Why? Who knows that sugar corn belongs to vegetable crops? At the same time, food corn – lop-sinking, or in other words its widespread naming – popcorn, is a grain crop.
Corn takes one of the first places among grain crops in the gross grain harvest in Ukraine. In recent years, in the conditions of the Luhansk region, the areas of food corn have significantly expanded. The value of corn is determined by both the high level of productivity and the biochemical composition of the grain: proteins, fats, carbohydrates, sugar, minerals, and vitamins. The protein of sugar corn contains in a significant amount such essential amino acids for the human body, as lysine and tryptophan.
In order to receive stable and good harvests of high-quality food corn, it is necessary to observe the technology of cultivation. One of the main technological operations is “Sowing”.
Thus, on April 30, 2017 the seeding of experimental and demonstrative sections of food corn was carried out. The Candidate of Technological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Production Technologies and Professional Education A.A. Beseda, post-graduate student of the Department of Biology N.A. Tsygankova took part in the experiment. The works on laying experiments were supervised by The Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor of the Department of Production Technologies and Professional Education S.V. Masliyov.
The words of gratitude should be addressed to the employees of the farm “Urozhai”, who allocated the land for testing, assisted in the preparation of the soil for sowing, the breakdown of pilot plots and the sowing campaign.
During the experiments, nine varieties and hybrids of food maize were sown, including six varieties and hybrids of sugar and three hybrids of popping corn.
The experiments conducted in 2017 set the following goals and objectives:
- To establish agriculture and biological features of growth, development and formation of productivity of food subspecies of corn;
- To develop measures to increase the effectiveness of mineral and bacterial fertilizers;
- To reveal the influence of methods of basic and pre-sowing treatment of the soil on the yield of food subspecies of corn;
- To determine the yield of corn, depending on the timing and methods of sowing and seed sowing rates;
- To establish the effectiveness of combining mechanical and chemical measures of weed control in crops of food subspecies of corn.
These plots are laid out according to the work plans of the Departments of Production Technology and Professional Education and Biology.
This year the Department of Biology begins the admission to the first course for the specialty “Agronomy” and to the third year after the graduation from colleges (technical schools). Also we invite to study masters students in the specialty “Agronomy”. Everywhere there are budget places. These experimental plots will be used by students of the above-mentioned departments.
