The history of development of the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology is the history of achievements, innovations and success. The Institute was established in 1975 as a Faculty of Primary School Teachers Training in one specialty – “Pedagogy and Methodology of Primary Education”. However, the Department of Pedagogy as one of the leading departments of the Institute today was created in 1923, when the University was Donetsk Institute of Public Education.
During the period of 90s – the beginning of 2000s, the Faculty of Primary School Training began to develop rapidly in connection with the opening of new specialties. First it grew into the pedagogical and then the psychological and pedagogical faculty, and finally in 2009 it became the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology – one of the largest subdivisions of the University.
Now here are more than 1,000 students, Doctors of Sciences, Professors, Candidates of Science, Associate Professors, known all over the country and abroad. There are postgraduate courses, doctoral studies and the Specialized Academic Council for the defense of doctoral and candidate dissertations. For 40 years of existence, the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology was headed by only three people: B.P. Korotkov, L.A. Butoreva and G.I. Bozhko.
Gennadii Ivanovych Bozhko over 25 years of his deanery and directorate together with a team of like-minded people turned the Faculty for Training of Primary School Teachers with one specialty into a powerful Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology with seven specialties including “Preschool Education”, “Primary Education”, “Special Education. Logopedics”, “Special Education. Oligophreno-pedagogics”, “Psychology”, “Social Work”, “Pedagogy of Higher Education”.
In September 2014, the most difficult time for the University of – the War in the East of Ukraine, Gennadii Ivanovych Bozhko together with the staff of the University evacuated the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology to Starobilsk city. In 2015, when he was convinced that the Institute confidently “got to its feet” in conditions of evacuation, he transferred the leadership of the Institute to its graduate– Olena Leonidovna Karaman.
So, despite the evacuation, the Institute not only survived, but also recovered and continues to develop and win on the educational field.
Thus, last year at the seventh international exhibition “Modern educational establishments – 2016”, the Institute won a gold medal in the category “Psychosocial support for children and youth in difficult life situations.”
At the eighth international exhibition “Modern educational establishments – 2017”, the Institute again received a gold medal in the nomination “Modern socio-psychological and pedagogical technologies for supporting children and adults in a crisis situation”.
During the years of activity the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology has trained almost 23,000 specialists. We are proud of our graduates, who now carry out pedagogical activities in the educational, social and rehabilitation establishments of the city, region, throughout Ukraine.
