The Faculty of Natural Sciences is one of the oldest structural subdivisions of the University.
The Biological Department of the Faculty of Social Education of Donetsk Institute of Public Education (DIPE), which became the basis for the Faculty, was opened in 1928. But the chemical and the natural cabinets existed in DIPE from its opening. In 1932 the Agrobiological Faculty was established in DIPE, which in 1934 was transformed into the Chemical, and in 1936 – the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Chemistry. In 1934, Luhansk State Pedagogical Institute was established through the merger of DIPE and the Teachers’ Institute. Thus, there was the Faculty of Geography, which existed in the Teachers’ Institute since 1933. In 1951, on the basis of two faculties (the Geographical Faculty and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Chemistry) the Natural-Geographical Faculty was established, which in 2009 was named the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
The history of the FNS is inseparably connected with the history of the University. During the Second World War, in the period from summer 1942 to autumn 1943, the Faculty together with the University survived three evacuations, but always returned to their walls. Now in connection with the events in the east of the country, the University is in the fourth evacuation, from October 2014, the legal address of LNU fixed in 1, Gogol Sq., Starobilsk city.

“Behind … moments which we will never return back. I remember the field practice in Botany, Zoology, Geology; plant herbarium, insect collections and a collection of minerals (collected in the territory of the native land). Educational tours of the home country, tent cities and student songs near the bright fire. ”
