Labor Results

A scientist of LTSNU presented results of two decades of work – varieties and hybrids of corn.

Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor of the Department of Production Technology and Professional Education Serhii V. Masliyov devoted more than two decades to research growing corn. Since 2004, the study of culture takes place in Starobilsk. This summer, the scientist presented colleagues varieties and hybrids with greater customer value: five hybrids (“Konkurent”, “Medunitsa”, “Belosnezhka”, “Arctur”, “Iskushenie”) and one variety ( “Delicatessen”) of sweet corn, and three popcorn hybrid ( “Gostinets”, “Volcano,” “Furor”). In general, more than 170 experiments were held in the pilot-demonstration plots of food corn of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University in the territory of Starobilsk (the sown area is 1.44 ha).

Corn – is the third most important component of power supply in the world after wheat and rice. Serhii Volodymyrovych is sure that this culture is very beneficial for producers, even if you compare the price of grain, fodder maize with the cost of wheat.

The unpretentious culture is becoming more common, it is grown in arid climates and in cold regions due to the appearance of various resistant hybrids.

60% of the total world production of corn is used to feed cattle, more than 25% – for the food (cooking flour, cereals, canned foods, confectionery) and about 15% – for industrial processing (oil production, starch, molasses, alcohol, glucose, sugar, etc.).

Useful properties of corn are not limited in various application. This culture of food contains sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals for healing the body. These are B complex vitamins, C vitamin, PP, potassium, phosphorus, molybdenum, copper, iodine and others.

It is worth noting that today the world corn production exceeds wheat due to its high productivity and unpretentiousness.
