Eastern Etiquette: Dialogue Between Eastern and Western Cultures
23.2.2026
Meeting of the Youth Club of Oriental Cultures
On February 20, the Youth Club of Oriental Cultures held its regular meeting, dedicated to the peculiarities of etiquette in Eastern countries. Participants had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich world of traditions and codes of conduct that have been shaped over centuries in China and Japan.
Darіa Perepadia, Head of the Club, delivered a lecture entitled “Etiquette in Ancient China.” She explored the essence of the concept “礼” within Chinese cultural and philosophical tradition. Her presentation also introduced the audience to the rules of etiquette at the imperial court as well as traditional norms governing relations between men and women.
Yuliia Malakhova shared insights into Chinese table etiquette, explaining the rules of seating arrangements at banquets and family celebrations.
Sofiia Nedohybenko, a third-year student, prepared a presentation entitled “The Language of Chopsticks and Knives: Social Codes at the Korean Dining Table.” She familiarized participants with the traditions of serving food, the order of actions at the table, and the culture of using utensils in Korea.
The meeting was conducted in an interactive format: participants not only listened to presentations but also exchanged observations and posed questions. This dynamic allowed them to better appreciate how traditional norms of etiquette are deeply embedded in social life and how they influence communication with representatives of Eastern cultures.
Once again, the Youth Club of Eastern Cultures reaffirmed its mission — to serve as a platform for dialogue, discovery, and mutual enrichment. Such gatherings help young people broaden their horizons, cultivate tolerance, and gain a deeper understanding of the cultural specificities of different nations.
