Comprehensive Research on the Impact of Military Operations on the Environment of Ukraine

Students of the educational programs “Ecology” and “Landscaping” with the support of the international scholarship program Ukraine Future Leaders Research Scholarship conducted comprehensive research on the impact of military operations on the environment of Ukraine.

In 2025, students of the Department of Ecology and Landscape Gardening Kateryna MAKAROVA and Maria STRIZHAK, under the supervision of Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Landscape Gardening and Ecology Inna TYMCHENKO, worked on research into the consequences of war for the environment with the scholarship support of the Institute of International Education Ukraine Future Leaders Research Scholarship, USA, with the assistance of the Fulbright program.

Within the scholarship program, in particular, instrumental analysis of soil and drinking water samples from frontline communities was carried out. Field expeditions were conducted, soil samples were taken from the areas of shelling, and sent to the Ukrainian Laboratory of Quality and Safety of Agro-Industrial Complex Products at the National University of Bioresources and Environmental Management of Ukraine. Based on the research results, recommendations were provided for residents and community leadership. Experimental studies of atmospheric air pollution (using bioindication methods and portable devices) were conducted in the city of Myrhorod.

The Ukraine Future Leaders Research Scholarship program financially supports young scientists who live in Ukraine, study at Ukrainian universities and conduct research on the consequences of military operations and the restoration of territories affected by the war, contributing to the improvement of the professionalism and knowledge of young people for the further reconstruction of the country after the war.

This experience is an example of how perseverance, scientific interest and international cooperation open up opportunities for students and young scientists to participate in solving the country’s current challenges.
