Days of Japanese language and culture at the faculty of social and humanitarian sciences

Orientalists of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University held the traditional Days of Japanese Language and Culture

At the Faculty of Social and Humanitarian Sciences, the traditional Days of Japanese Language and Culture took place — an event that has already become a vivid hallmark of the Youth Club of Oriental Cultures and the academic life of the university’s Oriental Studies community. The festive atmosphere combined academic seriousness with creative inspiration: students and lecturers had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of Japanology, art, and language practice, experiencing harmony between cultural heritage and contemporary trends in the development of Japanese language and culture. Such events not only deepen knowledge about Japan but also foster intercultural dialogue, creating a space for open communication and mutual understanding.

09/12 Day 1: Japanese language day

Students studying Japanese together with their lecturers attended a conversational workshop with Yamadzaki Nonoka (山崎 野乃花). During the session, they practiced natural pronunciation, acquired speaking and listening skills. The meeting was held in a positive atmosphere, with all participants actively engaging in discussions and asking questions.

10/12 Day 2: Japanology day

On this day, Tamara Zhuk, lecturer at the Oriental Languages Department and Intercultural Communication of Kharkiv V. N. Karazin National University, gave a guest lecture for LNU orientalists on the topic “Historical Preconditions and Features of the Formation of Japanese Studies in Ukraine until 1991.” The lecture highlighted the stages of academic interest in Japan, outlining the influence of cultural, political, and scientific factors that contributed to the establishment and development of Japanese Studies in Ukraine.

11/12 Day 3: Japanese culture day

The guarantor of the educational program “Language and Literature (Japanese, English)” Yuliia Malakhova, conducted a workshop “Furoshiki: Tradition and Modernity.” Participants were introduced to the art of traditional Japanese cloth wrapping. The event combined historical context with modern interpretations, showing how this ancient practice can become part of an ecological lifestyle and creative design today. They discussed the origins of this art, its evolution, and contemporary applications, learned to wrap New Year gifts in the furoshiki style.

18/12 Day 4: Translation day

Future Orientalists and all those interested in contemporary Japanese manga and light novels met with professional translator Oleksandra Borzova. She spoke about the manga she translates and their lexical and stylistic features. Oleksandra emphasized the importance of the educational component “Stylistics of the Japanese Language” in the professional activity of a translator, particularly for translating modern Japanese popular works. The meeting was held in a friendly and warm atmosphere, with participants communicating not only in Ukrainian but also in Japanese, sharing impressions.

The Days of Japanese Language and Culture gave all participants not only new knowledge but also warm emotions, a sense of unity, and inspiration to continue discovering the world of the East together. Once again, we have proven that our university community values traditions and opens new horizons for the development of Japanese Studies in Ukraine. The meetings and events held become a solid foundation for future academic and cultural projects.
