Holodomor Memorial Day

On the eve of the Holodomor Memorial Day , employees of the Volodymyr Malik Public Library held an hour of remembrance for students of the Professional College of LTSNU.

The mass extermination of the grain-growing regions by famine is a deliberate genocide of Ukrainians that has been kept quiet for half a century. Now we have a unique opportunity to speak about this crime out loud – to read the inscriptions on the black tablets of the past.

During the event, unique photographs from the life of our region in the 1930s were shown, impressive documents and eyewitness testimonies were read. Oleksandr Karpenko, a history teacher of our university, spoke about the terrible events of Ukrainian history, the prerequisites for the Holodomor, and the policies of the Stalinist regime. The writer Hanna Krevska shared her memories of the ancient, tragic events of the Holodomors, which were included in her books “Monastery Plums” and “The Strand of the Family”. College social teacher Oksana Khodorovska read the essay “Melania’s Bun” – based on an incident recorded by historian Tetyana Gurt. There was also a performance “Food of the Thirty-Third.” Students in separate triangles of life wrote and characterized the “dishes” of the famine. The famine destroyed not only wealthy and independent peasants, but also generations of the agricultural population, undermining the foundations of the nation, destroying traditions and spiritual culture.

We must remember and know the terrible pages of the genocide of our people.
