Master Class on Writing Hieroglyphs

On 16 October, teachers and students of the Educational and Research Institute of Philology and Journalism held a master class on writing hieroglyphs with students of the Poltava Agricultural and Economic College.

A creative atmosphere prevailed, and everyone immersed themselves in the mysterious world of the East. Third-year students majoring in Philology. Eastern Languages and Literatures (including translation), first – Chinese, Sofia Nedogibchenko and Daria Korabel shared with those present their knowledge of the symbolism and secrets of writing hieroglyphs. Sofia brought her own works to demonstrate her calligraphic skills, talked about important aspects of quickly mastering the writing of complex hieroglyphs, and shared the secrets of associative memorisation of some of them. The students also learned about the peculiarities of using materials for work, for example, that red paper is mainly used for festive events and amulets.

In ancient times, scribes wrote hieroglyphs (sacred signs) with bamboo brushes. The basic rule is to write from left to right, top to bottom. Calligraphy is believed to influence creative potential. A separate field should be allocated for each hieroglyph. A complex hieroglyph can consist of 4-5 elements (graphemes). For example, the word «morality» consists of four graphemes. The first hieroglyphs that college students learned to write were «HUMAN» and «PEACE».

We thank everyone who participated! Your curiosity and desire to learn are inspiring!
