Serhii Hlotov Gives Interview to Ukrainska Pravda TV Channel

On September 23, a graduate and lecturer of the Institute of Natural and Agrarian Sciences Serhii Hlotov gave an interview to Ukrainska Pravda TV Channel under the telling title: “How a Scientist from Luhansk Resisted the Occupiers. Heroes of Resistance.”

Serhii HLOTOV, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Horticulture and Ecology, graduate of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University, participant of the 27th and 28th Ukrainian Antarctic expeditions, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor, member of the Scientific Council of the Luhansk Regional Organization of the All-Ukrainian Ecological League, junior researcher at the State Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Luhansk Nature Reserve of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, scientist-entomologist.

His story is an example of indomitability and courage. In 2014, Serhii was one of the first to go to Euromaidan in Luhansk, supporting Ukraine’s European course and calling on people not to be silent. When pseudo-rallies began in the city, and administrative buildings were seized by militants, he joined the resistance. At first it was a cultural struggle — educational projects, grants, and scientific work. Later it was real assistance to the Ukrainian military.

He was hunted by groups controlled by the Russian Federation: they destroyed his office, searched through taxi drivers, walkie-talkies, and phone books. Some of his friends and associates died. But he managed to escape and continued his struggle.

One of the most valuable steps was the preservation of the unique collection that Serhii had been collecting since 2004: entomological specimens, scientific documents, and rare materials. Today, this collection is stored in Lviv and is part of the national scientific heritage. Unfortunately, most of the reserves in Luhansk Oblast were destroyed, burned, or looted by the occupiers. Biodiversity monitoring, which had been ongoing since 1920, was interrupted for the first time in over a century.

In his interview, Serhii emphasized that war destroys not only the lives of people and cities, but also destroys nature, memory, and generations of scientific work. His story is both the pain of loss and pride in the indomitability of Ukrainians.

Colleagues of the ER INAS and the entire university staff are proud of Serhii Hlotov. He is an example of a true patriot of Ukraine, a courageous scientist and a faithful son of his Alma Mater, who proved that strength of spirit and love for the Motherland are stronger than any aggression.
