“Journalism in Frontline Territories”

A first-level (bachelor’s) student of the Educational and Research Institute of Social and Humanitarian Sciences, majoring in Sociology, completed the workshop training course “Journalism in Frontline Territories.”

During the month of March 20 to April 10, 2025, a series of four master classes dedicated to the work of the media near the combat zone was held for student journalists, their teachers and all interested parties. The event brought together more than 60 participants, most of whom were students of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. Our student Anatolii Anikiev also joined the workshop.

The workshop consisted of four meetings that covered the following topics:
– fact-checking as a countermeasure to propaganda and manipulation;
– video reports from the deoccupied territories;
– podcasts. How to cover Russian war crimes and the court cases of collaborators;
– social networks and the media. What do the two have in common and how to strengthen the first?

Anatolii was a listener on the first three topics, and on the last one he was already an active participant. In the introductory part of the training, Tetiana Khoronzhuk, a media person, social media editor of Radio “Nakipilo”, presented the results of a sociological survey on the use of social networks by Ukrainians; described the modern role of social networks as sources of information and their impact on the activities of the media; introduced the types of media and their features. According to the student, the interesting facts were that among the surveyed Ukrainians, only 60% use the Internet, and the second Internet source of information after Telegram is Youtube.
Then, the participants of the event moved on to practical advice on presenting information and managing social networks: they talked about determining the target audience, choosing topics, designing texts and visuals of posts, working with subscribers, and applications for work.

At the end of the training, the participants asked the speaker questions, to which they were able to receive detailed answers. The “homework” task was to create “cards” for the Instagram network based on a text article from Radio “Nakipilo”. According to the results of the workshop, all those who participated and completed the exercises of the trainers received certificates of completion of the training.
