Module 2. Strategizing under Uncertainty

From May 7 to 10, the second module of the professional development program for academic managers, “Strategizing under Uncertainty,” was held at Mariupol State University.

This is a unique initiative of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, implemented by the British Council within the framework of the joint project of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the World Bank “Improving Higher Education in Ukraine for Results”.

The participants of the program were representatives of leading universities from Kyiv, Sumy, Nizhyn, Kremenchuk, Kharkiv. Our university was represented at the event by a team consisting of the following:

  • Viktor Burdun — Head of the Department of Professional Education, Restaurant and Tourism Business;
  • Svitlana Vovk — Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work;
  • Olha Drobysheva — Scientific Secretary of the Academic Council of the University;
  • Yulia Nuzhna — Deputy Director for Academic and Scientific Work in Social Sciences and Humanities;
  • Yaroslava Yurkiv — Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work.

The focus of Module 2 was on key trends in the development of European higher education, transformation of the mission of universities, international cooperation, as well as strategic planning in conditions of uncertainty. The participants were particularly interested in the session dedicated to science as a strategic priority for the development of higher education institutions, in particular, the issues of open science.

The following were considered within the framework of the educational process:

  • modern approaches to the development and implementation of strategies in the face of change;
  • methods for monitoring the effectiveness of the strategy;
  • successful tools for adapting organizations to a dynamic environment;
  • key factors for the successful implementation of strategic goals;
  • scenario planning and evaluation of the results of strategies.

The team of our university had the opportunity to deepen its understanding of internal and external challenges that affect the implementation of the HEI strategy, and also learned effective change management tools that can be integrated into the strategic development of the university.

Ahead is completing homework assignments and passing tests for the next training module.
