“We Remember. We Win Together!”

On May 8, Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University hosted the event “We Remember. We Win Together!”, dedicated to the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II.

The event began in the university auditorium to honor all those who, at the cost of their lives, stopped the spread of Nazism and protected the world from darkness. It was a day of deep respect and national unity, a day when history and modernity merged in a single impulse – to preserve memory and fight for the future with dignity.

Those present watched a video address to the Ukrainian people by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, in which the head of state emphasized the significance of this date in the conditions of the full-scale war that is ongoing in Ukraine. The memory of the millions of victims of World War II, as well as the fallen defenders of modern Ukraine, was honored with a minute of silence.

The rector of the university, corresponding member of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Olena KARAMAN, addressed the participants with words of deep respect for the heroism of previous generations and the courage of modern defenders of Ukraine. She recalled the tragic pages of the history of the Ukrainian people — famines, repressions, World War II — and focused on the events that are ongoing today: “The war did not begin in 2022 — it has been going on since 2014, taking thousands of lives and forever changing the destinies of millions. But we persevered and are fighting. We are a nation that remembers its past and fights for the future.”

The event brought together students of various specialties, teachers, administration, and guests — everyone who shares Ukrainian values. Representatives of educational and scientific institutes and colleges of LTSNU solemnly took to the stage to present state flags. This became a symbolic act of conveying unity, invincibility, faith, and love for Ukraine. Then the National Anthem of Ukraine was solemnly played.

After the event in the hall, those present went out to the square in front of the university building to participate in the flash mobs “Chain of Memory” and “Banner of Victory and Peace”. During the “chain”, the participants passed a candle to each other as a symbol of memory of those who gave their lives for freedom, saying: “We remember!”. The act symbolized the continuity of the historical memory of the Ukrainian people.

At the end, the participants of the action walked to the memorial sign to the fallen heroes of World War II, where flowers were laid.

Another touching part of the finale of the celebrations took place – a commemoration of memory near the place of execution of local residents and prisoners of war in the Nazi camp “DULAG No. 171”. A history teacher from the Starobilsk Professional College of LTSNU told a brief history of this tragic and important place, emphasizing its importance for preserving historical memory. Flowers were also laid here as a sign of deep respect for all those whose lives were cut short during the terrible times of war.
