Information Hour About People with Disabilities
8.5.2025
An information hour about people with disabilities was held at the Institute of Arts.
On May 5, an information hour for the International Day of the Struggle for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was held for teachers and students of the Educational and Research Institute of Arts, which was conducted by the Deputy Director of the ER IA for Social and Humanitarian Work, Alona Tereshchenko.
The event talked about models of perception of disability and the rules of communication with people with disabilities, how to speak correctly, and which words reinforce stereotypes.
For example, when talking to people with disabilities, you should not use the expressions “suffers from…”, “sick with…”, correctly – “Lives with…”, “Has…”. In general, according to the social model of disability, a person is first of all a person, so to better remember “how correctly”, put the person in first place, and only then the diagnosis.
Plus, various projects to support people with disabilities in Ukraine and abroad were discussed. For example, Olena Zelenska’s initiative “Without Barriers”, where people are enlightened on this topic.
The students were very interested in learning new information on this topic and becoming more knowledgeable in this area.
