Open Lecture by Olha Yunina

Open Lecture by PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology Olha Yunina

On May 7, 2025, as part of the educational component “Slang in Professional Communication in English”, an open lecture was held by Olha YUNINA, PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology. The topic of the lecture was “Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Shortcuts: Enhancing Communication.”

During the lecture, Olha Yunina provided a thorough insight into the concepts of abbreviations, acronyms, and shortcuts as an essential part of modern English-language discourse, particularly in the context of both professional and informal communication. Special attention was given to the practical aspects of using such linguistic units in mass media, social networks, business correspondence, as well as in youth slang.

The students of the first year of the second (master’s) level of higher education, enrolled in the educational program “Ukrainian Language and Literature. Language and Literature (English)” (specialty 014 Secondary Education), took an active part in the discussion, demonstrating a high level of interest in the topic. In an interactive format, they identified abbreviations in authentic English texts, explained their meanings and contextual relevance, and shared personal observations on how such units are adapted across languages.

A special segment of the lecture was devoted to analytical work, during which students explored the usage of popular acronyms in professional environments, particularly in education, management, and IT.

Olha Yunina’s open lecture became a vivid example of combining academic depth with modern teaching methodology, fostering the development of critical thinking, linguistic intuition, and communicative competence among graduate students.
