Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation

May 8 — Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation. Day of Victory over Nazism in World War II.

Every year on May 8, Ukraine, together with the European community and many countries of the world, commemorates the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation – a day when we pay tribute to the millions of victims of World War II, remember the feat of those who fought for peace with weapons in their hands, and express gratitude to those who laid down their lives for the freedom of humanity.

This day is not about the triumph of the victors, but about deep pain and memory of the tragedy that touched almost every family. It is a reminder of the price of peace, of how important it is to preserve life, humanity, dignity and freedom.

The purpose of this day is to reconcile peoples, prevent the repetition of the tragedies of the past, reflect on the bitter experience of war and strengthen the culture of peace. We remember both military and civilian, all who suffered in the terrible hardships of 1939-1945.

Today, when Ukraine is once again fighting for its independence and fighting against the latest evil, the memory of World War II takes on a special meaning. We understand that peace is not a given, but the result of sacrifice, courage and indomitability.

The staff of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University calls for preserving historical truth, honoring the heroes of the past and supporting our defenders of the present.

We remember. We win. We fight for peace!
