Remembering the past for a safe future: students of LTSNU visited the museum exposition of Chornobyl survivors.
On April 30, 2025, students of the Starobilsk Professional and Professional Colleges of LTSNU made an important and emotional journey into the past by visiting the museum room of the Lubny city public organization of disabled people “Chornobyl Veterans”. This visit was timed to coincide with the 39th anniversary of the tragedy at the Chornobyl NPP and was supposed to take place on April 22, but was postponed due to a prolonged air alert.
The meeting began with an insightful excursion, which was simultaneously conducted by three liquidators of the consequences of the Chornobyl accident. Their sincere stories are not just pages of history, but a living testimony to the self-sacrifice, responsibility and courage of Ukrainians who stood up for the country at the most tragic moment of the man-made disaster of the 20th century.
The liquidators talked about the purpose of creating the museum room, about each exhibit that preserves the memory of those events, and shared their own memories: about how at a very young age they ended up in the 30-kilometer exclusion zone, how they did dangerous work without hesitation, without thinking about the risks, in order to stop the chain of destructive consequences.
The students listened with interest to the stories of eyewitnesses, asked questions, showing sincere interest and gratitude. The impressions of the meeting were captured in a joint photo for remembrance. And then there was a warm, heartfelt tea party in the office of the organization, where the head of the LMGOI “Chornobyl Veterans” sincerely treated everyone to tea and cookies, creating an atmosphere of family sincerity.
Oleksandr Karpenko, a teacher at Starobilsk Professional College, left a grateful note in the Museum Room’s Guest Book on behalf of the LTSNU staff and noted how important such meetings are for young people.
Such events are not just a tribute to memory, they are a bridge between generations, a reminder of the price of peace, of the need to be conscious citizens and protect the world around us.
Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University educates students in the spirit of patriotism, respect for the heroic past and awareness of responsibility for the future. We remember the heroes of the past – and together with them we honor the heroes of the present.
