Online Checkers Tournament

On April 18, Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University held an online checkers tournament as part of the university-wide sports festival.

Before the tournament, an opening conference was held, at which the participants were greeted by honored guests. The director of the National Institute of Chess and Chess Education wished all players an interesting and uncompromising fight, to participate more often in university events, and congratulated them on the upcoming holidays. The opening of the tournament was also attended by the president of the Kyiv Checkers Federation, Liubov Kvitka-Yezhova, and the European and World champion among girls and juniors, Valeria Yezhova. The guests noted that any result is a valuable experience, wished victory to the stronger and not to be upset with those who lose.

Despite the fact that the competition was not held in a face-to-face format, there were a lot of emotions from the game, victories and defeats. The position of the leaders in the standings changed practically after each round. Each participant demonstrated the desire and will to win.

At the end of the tournament, a meeting was also held at which the final results were announced, the winners and prize-winners of the competition were determined.

The places were distributed as follows: the bronze award was won by Denys Bilotskyi  – a 1st year student majoring in Therapy and Rehabilitation. The second place was taken by Pavlo Polovinka – a 2nd year student majoring in Secondary Education. Physical Culture, who was on rotation and was able to join the tournament and showed a very good result. The winner of the tournament was Pavlo’s classmate – Matvii Savchenko. Among the girls, the best were Sofia Ruban (specialty Physical Culture and Sports) and Yevhenia Molkina (specialty Therapy and Rehabilitation). The winners and prize-winners were awarded with diplomas and souvenirs with the symbols of the university.

The participants thanked the tournament organizer – Deputy Director of the ER IHCS Pavlo Hordienko for the opportunity to meet at the checkers boards even though they are at a great distance and in very different conditions, as well as to find out who is stronger in this sport, and just have fun spending time.

The players also thanked the chief judge of the competition – Oleh Stoliarevskyi, Executive Director of the Luhansk Regional Chess Federation, for the very high level of refereeing, because the competition took place in one breath without any failures or delays. In turn, the Directorate of the Educational and Research Institute of Health Care and Sports thanked Oleh for his constant participation and assistance in holding institute and university events.
