6.3.2025
A seminar-workshop on academic integrity was held at the Department of Landscape Gardening and Ecology.
The aim of the event was to teach students and scientists how to correctly cite sources, avoid plagiarism and effectively use tools for writing scientific texts. The meeting was attended by students of all specialties of the ER INAS and teachers.
The speakers of the seminar were: Dmytro SOPOV, Chairman of the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences Commission on Ethics and Academic Integrity, Head of the Department of Chemistry, Geography and Earth Sciences, who focused on relevant aspects of the European experience in observing academic integrity and revealed the basic concepts of plagiarism and its consequences in the academic environment; Iryna KYRPYCHOVA, Associate Professor of the Department of Landscape Gardening and Ecology, who shared practical advice on writing scientific papers, correct citation and using software for managing sources.
Plagiarism, even unintentional, can have serious consequences, including loss of trust and reputation and academic sanctions. Therefore, understanding how to correctly cite sources, paraphrase texts, and avoid violations is critically important for everyone who studies and does scientific work.
The following key topics were covered during the seminar:
- definition and types of plagiarism and the consequences of its detection;
- practices to avoid – copying text without citing, incorrect use of quotes, submitting the same work multiple times (self-plagiarism);
- how to avoid plagiarism – keeping records of sources, using citation programs (e.g., EndNote, Reference Manager), correct formatting of quotes and references;
- paraphrasing text – how to correctly paraphrase ideas to avoid mosaic plagiarism, and the importance of preserving the meaning of the original text.
Special attention was paid to practical aspects of writing scientific papers:
- use of primary and secondary sources, their differences and importance in scientific research;
- rules for formatting quotes, footnotes, and bibliographies;
- using plagiarism checking tools for independent analysis of texts.
Practical advice on keeping records of sources and using citation software was especially useful for the audience. Participants actively asked questions, including how to correctly paraphrase texts and what tools are best to use for plagiarism checking.
The lecturers also noted the importance of such events for improving the quality of scientific research and avoiding violations in future works. Such meetings contribute to the formation of a culture of academic integrity, which includes not only compliance with the rules of citation, but also a respectful attitude to the intellectual property of others. They teach students and scientists to work with sources, analyze information and create original works, which is the basis for the development of science and education.
We wish everyone success in their studies and scientific activities!
