Participation in the Scientific Colloquium

Recently, Professor of the Department of Philosophy and Sociology Ilia Kononov took part in a scientific colloquium of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada).

The topic of the colloquium: Can We Talk About Islamic Buen Vivir? Iran’s Development: A Case Study. The report for discussion was made by Professor Hassan Shahraki from Iran, who is currently a visiting scholar at Carleton University.

The concept of Buen Vivir was developed by philosophers and sociologists from Bolivia and Ecuador. It envisages the use of the life experience of the indigenous peoples of this region, ecologization, anti-colonialism and at the same time alternative modernization. This philosophical and sociological concept was translated into the political plane by the efforts of R. Correa and E. Morales. Professor Hassan Shahraki believes that the concept of “a decent life” can also be applied in Iran, which can serve as a justification for the separation of religion from the state. He called the ideological forerunners of the Iranian version of this concept liberation theology (Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, Mahmud Teleghani).

Prof. Ilia Kononov took part in the discussion of the report, questioning the statement about the possibility of “eco-theology”.
