International Holocaust Remembrance Day

The Holocaust translated from Greek as “burned entirely” is a definition of the mass murders of Jews in Europe from 1933 to 1945.

The Holocaust is also sometimes called the Shoah, which means “catastrophe” in Hebrew.

History cannot be undone. But the whole truth about it must be told. The Holocaust is a country of death. The deaths of the innocent… The Holocaust (1933–1945) was the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million European Jews by the Nazi German regime and its allies and collaborators. In addition to committing the Holocaust, Nazi Germany also persecuted and murdered millions of other victims.

On January 27, concentration camp prisoners and Holocaust victims are commemorated with a minute of silence all over the world. On this day, in Israel, as the most affected nation, life freezes: transport stops, government institutions stop working, and people leave all their affairs.

The history of our country, unfortunately, has sad pages of the past and present. The symbol of the Holocaust in Ukraine was the execution of about one hundred thousand people, most of whom were Jews, in Babyn Yar (Kyiv). A few months after the arrival on Ukrainian soil, Nazi control brought a cruel policy and mass murders of the Jewish civilian population. In 48 hours, 33 thousand children, women and men were brutally killed in Babyn Yar, most of whom were Jews living in Kyiv. But even before the end of the German occupation, by 1943, tens of thousands of prisoners of war and civilians – Ukrainians, Gypsies, Belarusians and other peoples – were deprived of their lives in this place.

As part of the Holocaust Remembrance Day, educators of the Higher Secondary Educational Service “Kadiivka Pedagogical Professional College of LTSNU were offered to watch an educational video clip “Holocaust: Pain and Memory”, initiated and developed by the student council of the college. The video presents literary and video (feature films) sources with brief annotations that will help to comprehend the tragedy of World War II and to believe in humanity again. In addition, students got acquainted with information about the celebration of this memorable event from the video material “A Day in History. Holocaust Remembrance Day” at the link: https://youtu.be/bnRyRpLoGnw

As a sign of honoring the bright memory of those who became victims of the Holocaust, the college staff joined the minute of silence, lighting candles in memory and bowing their heads, honoring the memory of the deceased.
