Event Dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of Ukrainian Radio

On November 18, 2024,  the ER IPJ hosted an event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Ukrainian Radio.

The event was organized by the Department of Journalism, which invited faculty members and higher education students from across the department.

The event aimed to:

– Strengthen national consciousness and pride in the achievements of Ukrainian culture, particularly in radio broadcasting;
– Foster an appreciation of the history of Ukrainian radio as a significant element of the information and cultural space;
– Promote respect for the professions of journalism and radio broadcasting, contributing to the development of a democratic society;
– Familiarize students with the history of Ukrainian radio, its milestones, and contemporary achievements;
– Motivate students toward professional self-development in journalism and radio.

Artem Halych, the Head of the Department of Journalism, delivered the opening remarks, stating: «Today, we proudly celebrate the 100th anniversary of Ukrainian Radio – a milestone symbolizing the relentless pursuit of truth, the power of the spoken word, and the unity of our nation. Exactly 100 years ago, on November 16, 1924, at 7:00 PM in Kharkiv, Ukrainians first heard the voice of radio through loudspeakers. The first radio genre broadcast live was a radio concert performed by the Viyom Quartet. This event marked the beginning of a new era in our nation’s history – the era of radio broadcasting. Since then, radio has become not merely a means of communication or information but a true symbol of national spirit, a source of culture, education, and inspiration for millions of Ukrainians.

Today, as we celebrate this centennial anniversary, we honor those who pioneered Ukrainian radio and thank everyone who continues this vitally important mission. Thanks to Ukrainian Radio, millions of our citizens can hear the voice of their country, learn the truth about events on the frontlines, listen to addresses from leaders, and receive messages of support from Western partners. Radio has become a symbol of resilience, connecting the hearts of Ukrainians and reminding us that, even amidst the darkness of war, the Ukrainian voice will always sound loud and confident. It is not merely a communication tool – it is a weapon in the information war, countering enemy propaganda, dispelling myths, and bringing the light of truth to every home».

The event’s moderator was Illia Tochenyi, a fourth-year bachelor’s student specializing in Journalism, a member of the Youth Council at the Luhansk Regional State Administration, the NGO Ukraine SOS, the National Association of Youth Advisers, and an ambassador of the UNITY program (Strengthening Youth Cooperation through Common Actions).

Tochenyi delivered an engaging lecture on the history of Ukrainian Radio, sharing intriguing facts and insights. A highlight of the celebration was a knowledge quiz on radio conducted via the interactive learning app “Kahoot,” prepared by Illia.

The event unfolded in a warm and friendly atmosphere. At the conclusion, participants expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the organizers and particularly to the creative and dynamic lecturer, Illia Tochenyi, for his well-prepared and informative presentation.
