Popular Science Lecture on the Basics of Genealogy

On October 29, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of History and Archeology Olha Drobysheva gave a lecture on the basics of genealogy for students of non-historical specialties.

The event took place within the course of popular science lectures initiated by the teachers of the Institute of Social and Humanitarian Sciences in order to popularize current problems of social and humanitarian sciences among university students.

The lecture on the topic “Where to look for your roots: the basics of genealogy” considered certain theoretical issues of genealogy as a science that studies the origin of families and individuals, family ties, the history of families of different social origins, its main terms and scope of application.

In addition, the lecturer described the main stages of genealogical research, gave practical advice on its organization. But the most interesting was the last part of the lecture, which was about sources that will come in handy when compiling a genealogy. In particular, a number of online resources were considered that allow you to start research without leaving home (FamilySearch, the project “Names of Independent Ukraine. 1917-1921”, the Unified Register of Holodomor Victims, the National Data Bank of Victims of Soviet-era Political Repression in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Martyrologist 20th century, digitized documents of Ukrainian archives, etc.).

During the event, which took place in a warm atmosphere, students had the opportunity to express themselves and get answers to questions about finding their ancestors and compiling their own genealogy.
