Meeting of the Scientific Group “Innovative Technologies of Teaching Geography”
25.10.2024
On October 24, a meeting of the scientific group “Innovative Technologies for Teaching Geography” was held at the Department of Chemistry, Geography and Earth Sciences.
Master’s student of the department Volodymyr VASYLETS presented a report on the topic “Some modern methods of forming cartographic competence in students.” The speaker noted that the development of cartographic competence is an important aspect of modern geographic education. Mr. Vasylets also emphasized the fact that cartographic skills are becoming an indispensable tool for the survival and protection of the citizens of our country during the war. He emphasized that innovative approaches to education, such as the use of digital cartographic tools, geographic information systems (GIS) and interactive platforms contribute to the effective formation of students’ cartographic competence.
The speaker suggested using resources such as National Geographic’s MapChart and MapMaker to help students learn how to make their own maps. Mr. Vasylets also emphasized the fact that there are many innovative and creative methodical techniques, the use of which will contribute to the interest of students in studying the map. Yes, you can offer students:
- find the “coordinates” of your birthday and arrange a virtual holiday party in this place;
- imagine yourself as an ambassador of Ukraine in any country. Find this country and its neighbors on the map. Find out what unique qualities an ambassador should have in order to represent Ukraine in this place? What should an ambassador learn about a country before moving there?
- combine consideration of world news with consolidation of the ability to determine the geographic coordinates of geographic objects that are mentioned in the news.
After the report, the participants actively participated in the discussion. Opinions were expressed that usually the study of geographical nomenclature is one of the difficult and not very interesting points for students. However, there are currently a large number of Google programs and mobile applications for the study of geographic nomenclature that can engage students and greatly simplify the study of geographic nomenclature. The participants of the group joked that teachers of other disciplines might even envy geographers who have such great learning simulators in their arsenal!
