On October 19, 2024, students of the Oriental Philology and Translation Studies Department of the Educational and Research attended an online lecture at the Confucius Institute of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

Chinese language learners joined the online lecture “The Immortal Myth – The Monkey King” held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. It was conducted by a teacher at the Confucius Institute Wang Xin, a graduate of Mianyang Normal University.

The Monkey King, Sun Wukong (妖猴), is widely known in China and is one of the main characters in the Chinese classical masterpiece “Journey to the West” (西游记) by the Ming-era writer Wu Chen’en (吴承恩). King Wukong represents the image of a man who is not afraid of power, seeks freedom and justice, and is a hero of Chinese folk culture. Thanks to the popularization of films, TV series and games, the image of Wukun has gained wide influence around the world and has become an important symbol of Chinese culture.

The lecture was held in Chinese. Future Chinese philologists had the opportunity not only to hear a lot of interesting facts, but also to listen and communicate with a native Chinese speaker. After the lecture, the participants took part in a discussion about the story of the Monkey King.
