Round Table Meeting

A round table meeting was held at the the Educational and Research Institute of Philology and Journalism, dedicated to the tea culture of the Far Eastern countries.

On October 18, the Oriental Philology and Translation Studies Department gathered for a round-table meeting dedicated to the traditions of the tea ceremony, and everyone abroad and across the country had the opportunity to join the event. The teachers and students immersed themselves in the atmosphere of real «茶道”, a philosophical and aesthetic concept based on tea brewing practices. All present were able to learn about the peculiarities of the old tradition, which is connected with an entire generation through centuries and eras.

At the beginning of the meeting, the assistant professor of the Oriental Philology and Translation Studies Department, Perepadya Daria, made a presentation. Daria conducted a fascinating course on the history of tea-making traditions in various countries of the Far East. The lecturer familiarized the audience with “茶道六君子”, tea-making accessories, or as they are called in China, the “Six gentlemen tea set”. After completing the theoretical part, Daria, using the 茶道六君子, demonstrated each stage of brewing Chinese tea.

Then the tea party began in a friendly atmosphere. The participants tasted the traditional Chinese treats 月饼, moon cakes, which were baked by Sofia Nedogybchenko, a senior lab assistant of the department. Belik Maryna, the teacher of the department, treated the participants to real Ukrainian pancakes with berries, cooked according to her grandmother’s recipe.

And moreover, all guests had an opportunity to tempt fate and open a secret text with predictions (from humorous wishes to really important words to support in such a difficult time). All those present got souvenirs in the form of bookmarks with the eloquent inscription “茶余饭后”, which has a metaphorical meaning.

Such a warm event was really necessary for all of us in such difficult times. We look forward to new meetings and invite everyone to join our Oriental studies community.
