Meeting of the Scientific Group “Innovative Technologies for Teaching Geography”

On October 15, a meeting of the scientific group “Innovative Technologies for Teaching Geography” was held at the Department of Chemistry, Geography and Earth Sciences.

Yulia HODUNKO, a master’s student of the department, presented a report on the topic “METHODS OF FORMING ENVIRONMENTAL COMPETENCE IN TEACHING INSTRUCTIONAL NATURAL SCIENCE COURSES.”

The speaker noted that one of the key tasks of the New Ukrainian School is the formation of environmental competence of male and female students, starting from the youngest age. The propaedeutic course “Getting to know nature”, which is taught in grades 5-6, plays a fundamental role in this process.

For the formation of ecological competence during the teaching of the propaedeutic course “Getting to know nature”, Ms. HODUNKO proposed to develop the ecological consciousness and ecological culture of students with the help of tasks of the following content:

  • create a presentation on how everyday self-care products can be replaced with ecological alternatives;
  • keep an “Energy Diary”, where students record how they and their families save electricity at home, analyze the effectiveness of these measures and discuss them in class;
  • write an essay on the topic “Environmental superhero: who is he and how does he save the planet”;
  • create your own environmental comics, fairy tales, animated videos or slideshows on environmental topics.

The speaker emphasized that the effective formation of environmental competence is facilitated by the introduction of environmental projects. Such interesting student projects were presented as:

  • the project “Biodiversity of my region”, where students study local species of plants and animals and analyze threats to their existence;
  • the project “Eco-art: art from waste”: students work in groups to create art objects from secondary materials (plastic bottles, paper, fabric, etc.);
  • the “Picture Gallery” project, where students get acquainted with the paintings of street artists about environmental problems and create their own drawings (murals) on environmental topics.

At the end of the report, the participants actively participated in the discussion, asking the speaker questions to clarify important aspects that could remain unclear. The participants also expressed their own opinions and had the opportunity to exchange ideas about the best methods and techniques for the formation of environmental competence of students.
