Participation in the International Seminar on the History of Linguistics

On 27-28 May, Svitlana Shekhavtsova, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Romance & Germanic Philology, participated in the seminar “Advances in the History of Linguistics.”

The scientific event was held at the University of Palermo (Italy). This seminar was organized as part of a project funded by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research: “Parts of Speech towards Rhetoric: The Search for Syntax in Continuity between the Middle Ages and Modernity” (SiRe PRIN 20172F2FEZ, PI Paola Cotticelli, University of Verona).

The event aimed to fill in the gaps in linguistic historiography by delving into the emergence of syntactic categories from late antiquity to theories before the Por-Royal of 1660.

The range of research topics was particularly rich in medieval and early modern grammatical theory of syntax; missionary grammars and related works; syntactic meta-language and new syntactic concepts; description of subordination strategies; subordination vs. conjunction, sentence linearity vs. structural order.
