As part of the TWINNING project: Supporting Ukrainian Universities (https://www.twinningukraine.com/) Iryna Myhovych, Director of the Institute of International Education of LTSNU, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, studied at the Hague University of Applied Sciences, The Hague, the Netherlands, under the Collaborative Online International Learning program.

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) – the direction of implementation of the “Internationalization at Home” model, which involves the promotion of international cooperation through virtual mobility. COIL offers results that are similar to physical mobility in terms of improving the foreign-language, global, intercultural competencies of participants in the educational process of universities, since it involves involving participants from two different cultures in teamwork that occurs synchronously and asynchronously using a variety of online tools.

The curriculum from the Hague University of Applied Sciences contained the following modules: 1) Demystifying COIL and its relations to internationalization; 2) Intended Internationalised Learning Outcomes & The intercultural perspective; 3) Collaboration and Technology; 4) Reflection, Evaluation and next steps; 5) Embedding and supporting COIL in the institution.

Attention was paid to the development and implementation of COIL courses (search for a foreign partner institution, preparation of a package of documents, organization of each stage of cooperation, intercultural component, language and psychological barriers, coordination of time, dates, formation of a team of teachers and students, project implementation), as well as monitoring and evaluation of results within COIL-training.

COIL as a direction of institutional internationalization has a number of advantages for LTSNU, because in the conditions of limited academic mobility during the war, for our students and teachers it is an opportunity to exchange experiences with peers and colleagues from all over the world, without leaving the walls of their native university. Currently, the development of a joint project in the direction of “Virtual Academic Mobility Through Collaborative Online International Learning” is underway.
